With the Inverness Half Marathon and 5k set to take place this weekend in the Highland Capital, we take a look at some of the amazing active events that take place in and around Inverness…
1. Inverness Half Marathon - March
The Inverness ½ Marathon is the perfect Spring race to keep you motivated and training. This popular race follows a scenic route with great PB potential through the Highland capital of Inverness. If you are looking for a shorter distance or are new to running, the Inverness 5K could be the race for you. Whatever your running ability, fitness, age or experience if you enter the Inverness 5K, the organisers guarantee you’ll cross the finish line with a smile on your face!
2. Etape Loch Ness, April
A cycle sportive taking place around the iconic Loch Ness offering the chance to cycle 66 miles (106km) on traffic free roads. The closed-road route starts and finishes in Inverness and offers 900m of ascent with a timed King of the Mountain 4.8 mile (9km) climb gaining 380m in height and gradeints reaching 12% at times.
3. Highland Cross - August
The 50-mile coast-to-coast duathlon is now in its 36th year. Traversing the spectacular Scottish Highlands from coat to coast, 20 miles on foot and 30 miles by bike, west to east from Kintail through Glen Affric and Strathglass to Beauly. The ‘Midsummer Madathon’ has raised more than £4.7 million for Highland charities since its inception in 1983.
4. Prime Four Beast Race, Loch Ness - September
Beast yourself on a leg-numbing 10k along the banks of Loch Ness, through dense forest, undergrowth, heather and bog, on rough dirt tracks and into the loch itself... then there’s the 30 mega obstacles – giant water slides, icy loch water, thick mud & swap crossings – it’s the ultimate solo or team challenge.
5. Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running, September
Scenic marathon along the shore of Loch Ness, with a 10k, 5k and Wee Nessie races also on offer. The Baxters Loch Ness Marathon is quite possibly one of the most stunning marathons in the world. With spectacular scenery, fantastic atmosphere and a truly memorable experience – it’s no wonder it was voted in the top 10 UK marathons by Runner’s World readers in 2016 and is on the bucket list for many runners from around the world.
6. The Culloden Run - October
The Culloden Run 17.46k is a testing challenge over a 10.83 mile route which passes through stunning scenery and by historic landmarks; Culloden Battlefield, Clava Cairns, River Nairn and the awesome River Nairn Viaduct – can you ‘battle’ round the course?
The Culloden 10K is an exciting, fast, mostly flat route which passes around the quiet perimeter roads of Culloden Battlefield
